Last month, Alfons Sampsted opened the door to extending his stay at Birmingham City beyond this season.
The League One side took the right-back on loan from FC Twente last summer and have an option to make his stay permanent.
Twente Insite now bring an update on the 26-year-old’s future at Birmingham City.
They state Birmingham City’s option to buy Sampsted will be ‘automatically activated’ if they avoid relegation from League One.
Chris Davies’ side are leading the table and are eight points ahead of second placed Wycombe Wanderers with a game in hand.
The bottom four teams out of 24 clubs will be relegated to the third division and Bristol City are currently 21st with 33 points. They and teams below them can’t get ahead of Birmingham City even if they win all their games.
In other words, Birmingham City mathematically avoid relegation already and Twente Insite state the option to buy Sampsted will be activated. They aren’t aware of the fee the Eredivisie side will receive from his sale.
Sampsted played 462 minutes from 15 games for the English club this season. He was on the sidelines for three months and returned to the pitch last week.
The 26-year-old hasn’t started in the league and despite his mixed season, Birmingham City have to make his stay permanent.
