Hired over the summer to try and help Birmingham City do well in the Championship this year, Harry Redknapp’s transfer policy seemed to involve strengthening the midfield.
Already signing in Cheikh N’Doye on a free from Angers, the now jobless manager also tried to sign Afriyie Acquah from Torino, leading to a rather lengthy saga that ended in the midfielder staying in Italy.
However, despite Torino keeping hold of him, the Birmingham summer target hasn’t really played this season, playing just 282 minutes in the league spread over 7 appearances, and Tuttosport in Italy suggest the player could be sold in January.
Despite contract renewal talks being held between Acquah and the Serie A club, an agreement hasn’t been found, and the Italian newspaper believe an exit is likely.
With no new deal, the longer the Ghana international stays at the club, the more his price will drop, so selling him as soon as possible is their best course of action.
It remains to be seen if, without Redknapp at the helm, the Blues are still interested in bringing Acquah to St Andrew’s, but if Steve Cotterill agrees with his predecessor’s way of thinking, then a cheaper deal than the €10m the Italian outfit were asking for a few months ago.
However, when quizzed on the matter, a source close to the player told Sport Witness on Friday that nothing had been discussed between the player, his entourage and the club regarding a possible sale, and they weren’t aware of any situation that would lead to such an outcome.
