Thursday’s edition of Tuttosport has a front page with Douglas Luiz splashed across it and the words ‘Douglas lezioni di Motta’, which essentially means the player is receiving lessons from Juventus manager Thiago Motta.

Tuttosport is a Turin sports newspaper and Juventus is their bread and butter, or pane e olio if you prefer. They and others have been simmering over the past week with growing doubts about signing the Brazilian from Aston Villa.

There’s confusion over why such a big signing hasn’t waltzed into the Juventus midfield like he was expected to.

Aston Villa’s Damian Vidagany coming out in recent days and saying the whole operation was largely forced by PSR pressure has also encouraged some Italian suspicions, and strangely his comments have been bigger news in Italy than back home.

Tuttosport explains that since arriving from the Premier League club, Luiz has only had 55 minutes over three games. They see the problem as tactical and physical, with the midfielder not quite slotting into how Thiago Motta wants to play.

Therefore, the Juventus manager is going to dish out some football lessons during the international break so Luiz understands better what is required of him.

A lot of the reaction feels over the top and largely related to the nature of the deal and news prompted by Vidagany’s comments. There’s plenty of time to get off to a good first season in Turin, but Douglas Luiz appears to be facing added scrutiny due to the background of his move from Aston Villa.
