The defender left the weekend match against Empoli after only 39 minutes with a problem in his thigh. Since then he’s had further tests and is ruled out of the match.
The Brazilian had already been subbed early in a game against Milan this season due to other injuries, and is now set to stay sidelined until he’s fully fit.
Atalanta are currently on top of Group F with four points. They’re followed by Young Boys with three, Manchester United, also with three, and Villarreal with one.
The Red Devils receive the Serie A side at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under pressure to do better in both the Premier League and Champions League.
