Marcelo Bielsa was instrumental in helping Leeds United return to the top flight for the first time in 16 years, after winning the Championship in the 2019/20 season.

He guided them to the ninth place finish in the Premier League last term. The Whites were convinced to retain their manager and in August 2021, they handed him a fresh deal to keep Bielsa at Elland Road until the end of this campaign.

Leeds, however, have struggled in the league this term, managing only five wins after 25 matches. They suffered heavy defeats against Manchester United and Liverpool in the last two games, conceding 10 goals in the process.

Bielsa’s side have the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 56 goals so far.

After the 6-0 humiliating loss against Liverpool on Wednesday, the former Lille manager’s position at Leeds is now ‘complicated’. That’s according to Sportitalia journalist Gianluigi Longari, who took to Twitter to make these claims.

According to the Italian journalist, Leeds are evaluating several options to replace Bielsa and Paulo Fonseca is among the names they are handling. The 48-year-old has been without a job since leaving AS Roma at the end of the last season.

Longari doesn’t make it clear whether Leeds are looking at Fonseca as one of the options to take over immediately or after this season, when Bielsa’s contract at Elland Road runs down.
