The Spanish media have today been picking up the Unai Emery to Newcastle United claims, and there’s multiple views on the manager potentially returning to the Premier League.
Villarreal have told multiple sources in the Spanish media that there’s been no contact from the English club, and they know nothing about the situation. It has been confirmed there’s a release clause in the coach’s contract, which is thought to stand at €6m.
El Periodico Mediterraneo, the club’s local newspaper, believe there’s been no contact with Emery either, which would seem strange given the claims.
Villarreal’s president Fernando Roig has talked down the idea of an imminent move, although he made it clear the decision would be down to Emery rather than the club, presumably if the clause is paid.
Now Josep Pedrerol, one of the country’s best known sport journalists, has given his take. The El Chiringuito anchor has said that when it comes to Emery and Villarreal, “it’s better to leave five minutes before they kick you out”. That would be related to the club’s struggles this season, which see them in 13th place and three points above the relegation zone.
Pedrerol believes the move would be good everyone involved, and he clearly doesn’t feel that Emery going to Newcastle United would be a huge loss for Villarreal.
