Former Everton midfielder Peter Reid has labelled his teammate Neville Southall the world’s best after picking him in his perfect eleven.

Reid was asked by Four Four Two to select the best eleven players he played with during his career, and Southall made the cut.

Despite playing with England legend Peter Shilton for many years, Reid chose his Goodison Park teammate because he feels he was the best around at that time: “In that great Everton side, Nev won us more matches than any outfield player – he was quite simply the very best in the world at the time.”

Reid’s eleven is understandably made up heavily of Everton players after the Merseyside club enjoyed one of the most successful periods in their history during the mid-1980s.

Other Everton players to be picked by the former England international were Gary Stevens, Kevin Ratcliffe, Trevor Steven, Paul Bracewell, Kevin Sheedy, Andy Gray, Graeme Sharp, whilst his chosen manager was Howard Kendall.

During that period Everton won the First Division title twice, the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup.

Southall was also part of the Everton side which won the 1995 FA Cup, defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the final, thanks to a Paul Rideout goal.
