According to a claim in the Italian media, Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has personally become involved in the Premier League side’s pursuit of Martin Dubravka.

The Sparta Prague goalkeeper has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in recent days.

TMW have today reported Benitez has contacted Sparta Prague manager Andrea Stramaccioni with regards to bringing the 29 year old to St James’ Park.

It’s been claimed Newcastle United are prepared to pay €6m for Dubrakva, and the Slovakia international is Benitez’s first choice if they miss out on Napoli’s Pepe Reina.

At this point it’s worth putting in the caveat that Benitez this week told Mundo Deportivo he’s not at all interested in Reina.

Newcastle United have been linked with number of goalkeepers in recent months, as Benitez looks to bring in an experienced stopper. Karl Darlow is Newcastle United’s current No.1, but Benitez clearly isn’t comfortable with his options between the sticks.
