Wednesday evening saw some unsavoury activity take place involving Rangers fans ahead of the clash between Philippe Clement’s side and Benfica on Thursday night, with the Scottish supporters being targeted.
Newspaper Record writes about the ‘violent confrontations’ at the Restauradores zone in Lisbon, but it’s pointed out that the Rangers fans actually started as the victims, as some ‘casuals’ approached the hotel where the Scottish supporters were staying and started ‘throwing stones’.
It was only then that they came out to ‘fight back’ and all the mess started.
The incident is also reported by Diário de Notícias, who bring a few more details on it, claiming it was actually Atalanta fans who were fighting Rangers supporters.
Atalanta fans had watched their club facing Sporting in Lisbon on Wednesday night, while Rangers supporters were waiting for tonight’s clash against Benfica.
It’s reported the incident took place at 11pm and only ended once the police got there. Still, no arrests were made, and fortunately, there have been no significant injuries.
Diário de Notícias points out that the schedule was approved by UEFA and the Portuguese police, who may now regret having fans of two foreign clubs in town at the same time.
