Tottenham Hotspur will be without Toby Alderweireld for their Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen. And unless there’s a huge change in fortunes, or perhaps a minor medical miracle, it looks like they’ll be without the player for the Premier League match against Arsenal too.

Leaving Tottenham’s mid October match against West Brom on a stretcher, it was a little much to expect Alderweireld to return just over a couple of weeks later, and it’s surely better Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs use caution a quarter of the way into a long season.

Indeed, when Alderweireld was injured, there was worry in Belgium that he wouldn’t be fit for the country’s next internationals, against the Netherlands on November 9th, and Estonia on November 13th.

Kristof Terreur of Belgium’s HLN newspaper has been adding sporadic updates on the player and today his insight didn’t sound overly positive for those Tottenham fans hoping for an Arsenal miracle.

At least Alderwerield is getting a well deserved rest. If he doesn’t manage to return before the international break, then Pochettino will surely hope that rest isn’t interrupted by a Roberto Martinez call-up.
