Transferring from Gent to Standard Liège over the summer just under £700k, Benito Raman’s season has started rather nicely.
The 21-year-old has scored five goals in 11 appearances for his new club, and is set to return to his former side tonight ahead of a clash against Gent.
Previewing the game were Het Laatste News, relayed by 7sur7, who decided to go talk to the young striker about his career so far, as well as his summer transfer, which he fears might cause a few boos and whistles in the stands on Thursday night.
Throughout the interview, the youngster opened about various aspects of his life, as well as his rejected opportunities to move to another country for money, including to England and the Premier League.
He said: “It bothers me to not have left Gent through the front door. When I was 15, I could have chosen the financial option. Clubs like Aston Villa, Inter Milan and Lille wanted me, but I wanted to breakthrough at Gent.
“Everything went well, until they won the title. The next year, after 14 years in Gand, I had to pack my bags, like a botched transfer who’d only spent six months at the club.”
Already a Belgian U21, the striker, appears determined to prove his former club wrong, even going as far as saying that ‘if they boo me, they can’t be surprised if I celebrate a goal’.
Few would have rejected the likes of Villa, who were a stronger team than they are now, but with age on his side, and finding good form on the pitch, who knows? Maybe the opportunity will present itself again one day?
