Belgium’s team doctor has questioned the fitness of Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne’s going into this summer’s Euros.

The Manchester City star was one of many Belgium players not to reach their level during the competition, following their elimination at the hands of Wales last week.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Kris Van Crombrugge said when De Bruyne joined up with the Belgian squad they thought the attacker didn’t look well.

Van Crombugge revealed the Manchester City man didn’t show any improvement during their early training sessions, and then when the tournament began. The Belgian doctor believes De Bruyne did start play to better as the Euros progressed, but thinks he never reached the level expected of him.

“We initially thought he felt sick. He did not improve during the training sessions and the competition. As the tournament progressed, he got better every game. But his flashes of class were omitted, he never reached his top level,” said the Van Crombrugge.

Belgium and Manchester City in the past have had their run ins with regards to the fitness of Vincent Kompany. The Premier League club haven’t been thrilled with Belgium for using their captain in games when he hasn’t been 100% fit, but blame has gone the other way too.
