The Spanish media are intrigued by the Spanish Football Federation inviting Spanish sportspeople to watch the match between England and Spain at Wembley on Tuesday night.

Now, you may well feel that a country’s sports federation inviting sports people from their country to watch a sporting event involving the country is perfectly commonplace, but it’s one of the major stories of the night for the Spanish media.

Invited into the box were several footballers, and tennis players who had been playing in the London Masters event. Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla and Lucas Perez were in attendance, but the big story for much of the Spanish media is Gerard Pique, with the Barcelona player appearing to be ambassador in chief.

Pique had also been watching the tennis in London, another thing which has been big news in Spain, and the Barcelona player continues to get column inches regardless of what he does.

Cazorla and Perez missed Spain’s very late equalising goal, because the Arsenal players had already made their way to the away team’s dressing room to great their compatriots and, as they thought at that point, lighten the mood after a loss.
