Martin Braithwaite has had surgery after injuring his knee in Barcelona’s match against Getafe.

The striker had hoped to play a bigger role this season under Ronald Koeman, and resisted attempts to push him out of the club in the summer window. Happy at the Camp Nou, the Denmark international has been determined to show he’s more than an afterthought for Barcelona, and felt his manager backed him in the quest.

Given all of that, the injury comes as a big blow. Mundo Deportivo report Braithwaite underwent surgery on Thursday, and despite Barcelona providing no update on the player’s comeback, the Catalan newspaper have found out the information themselves.

Having contacted the player’s entourage, Mundo say Braithwaite is likely to be out for at least three months, a period which it’s stated could be extended to four months.

The situation is a blow for Koeman, who is also having to deal with the fitness problems of Sergio Aguero, Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati.

All of this is likely to provide more opportunities for Luuk de Jong, who arrived from Sevilla in the summer market.
