Mesut Özil’s future, much like Alexis Sanchez’s, remains a big worry for Arsenal fans, with both players able to negotiate a free transfer in 11 months’ time.
Of course, a lot can happen between now and then, with Arsenal either stumping up the money to match their wage demands or letting them go in the summer for some money.
As things stand, considering neither player appears close to an agreement, the second outcome looks the likeliest, and suitors are already starting to form a line, especially for the German attacking midfielder.
According to El Confidencial in Spain, both Barcelona and Bayern Munich have expressed an interest for the Arsenal star, with the Catalan club allegedly the favourites due to the player’s reluctance to return to the Bundesliga, a league he left when he signed for Real Madrid back in 2010.
Thoroughly enjoying his time in Spain, Özil could be tempted by a transfer to Barcelona, who have already made it clear to his agents they intend to try and get a deal in the summer if Wenger doesn’t convince him to sign a new contract beforehand.
With only a year left on his contract, Barcelona reckon they’d be able to acquire his signature for ‘far fewer millions’ than what Real Madrid received for him (€45m).
A lot rests on whether Wenger wants to negotiate, of course, but if the scenario is selling or see him go on a free, the logical move would be to sell him, especially for a player of his quality.
