Jordi Alba still hasn’t agreed a contract extension with Barcelona.

Despite the player’s repeated public comments about his contractual situation, there doesn’t appear to have been any big advance made on the matter.

With a deal ending in June 2020, it would have been ideal for Barcelona to agree a new contract before now, but it seems such is the confidence at the club that he’ll eventually commit, they can leave things longer than they may have otherwise done.

That brings the risk of him getting fed up and deciding he wants to move, with Juventus interested, and also hands the player more power to get a better deal. What Barcelona have saved in not renewing earlier could be lost in having to give a bigger contract.

Sport say the contract is only half the problem, as the Catalan newspaper explains Barca are lacking balance. They have options at right back and central defence, but not so much on the left side, and this shows when Alba is injured or suspended.

It’s stated Barca have a ‘serious problem’ with the situation and face a ‘black hole’ without Alba. Sport believe there’s a ‘lack of planning’ at Barcelona when it comes to the left back position.
