With a little bit more fortune it’s not too outlandish to think Pau Lopez could have been in Spain’s squad for Euro 2020. He’s been linked to Barcelona at several times during his career and Sunday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo brings a transfer back to the table.
Very highly rated as a youngster coming through with Espanyol, in 2016 he went on a loan deal to Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs having a buying option to make the move permanent.
Pau Lopez impressed the coaches at Tottenham, however, the Premier League club tried to renegotiate the terms of the agreement and the figures got so ridiculously low that Espanyol welcomed him back from Spurs, only to see the goalkeeper move to Real Betis on a free transfer in 2018.
With Jose Mourinho new manager at Roma it’s thought he wants a more experienced option and is moving for Rui Patricio of Wolves.
That could see Pau Lopez leave, and that’s where Barcelona come in.
Mundo Deportivo state ‘Barcelona has asked his agent’, Albert Botines, for information about a possible move this summer.
Ramon Planes of Barcelona knows the player from his time with Espanyol, and there’s a chance he recommended him to Spurs before leaving Tottenham.
Pau Lopez would be a back-up at Barcelona and at 26-years-of-age, he will perhaps be looking for near-guaranteed game time.
