After Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed Barcelona’s interest in Matthijs de Ligt, it’s no surprise the Ajax defender is a priority target for the Blaugrana.

On March 8th, Mundo Deportivo reported the La Liga winners ‘will do everything possible’ to sign the 19-year-old in the summer.

Another Catalan newspaper, Sport, once again claims the Netherlands international is a priority target for Ernesto Valverde’s side, but they will have to ‘overcome some obstacles’ if they are to get the centre-back’s signing over the line.

The Spanish champions will face tough competition from Bayern Munich and the Bavarian club have already approached the Eredivisie outfit to express their interest.

Ajax have been notified by the Bundesliga outfit about their intention of submitting a formal offer for the Dutchman at the end of the season.

Several reports in Spain (we have covered numerous claims) suggest the central defender’s preference is to follow his teammate Frenkie de Jong to Barcelona.

De Ligt is convinced that competition for a place in the starting XI at Barcelona will not bother him, if he is to join them.

In the offices of Camp Nou, there is optimism that Barca will win the race to secure De Ligt’s services because they believe there is a ‘clear advantage’ for them to land him. In addition to this, the club has been in constant communication with the player and his environment.

Sport claims Bayern is a ‘great threat’ for Barcelona in their efforts to land the Ajax star and it should be seen how things progress from now until the end of the season.
