Catalan outlet Sport today features an interview with Ajax goalkeeper André Onana, who’s now back on featuring for the Dutch side following his long suspension.
Recalling the great years he’s lived with the Eredivisie giants, the 25-year-old mentioned some of the great results he’s had at the club, but also remembered a special match against Manchester United.
Ajax faced the Red Devils in the Europa League final in 2017, when the Old Trafford side won 2-0, with goals scored by Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Onana was very young at the time, and called it one of the great experiences in his career.
“The year we eliminated Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League was an outrage for such a tiny club. However, I am left with the final of the Europa League against Manchester United,” Onana told Sport.
“We were normal players and we reached the final with a lot of nerves, I was 19 years old. I thought: ‘Wow, a few months ago I was playing with these footballers on the PlayStation and now I’m facing them’. It was a barbaric experience. Despite not winning, reaching the final, for me, was already a victory. We lost, but we learned a lot and I lost my fear of everything and everyone. Up to this point.”
Now back playing with Ajax, Onana has been linked to a few European sides.
He claims there are no talks for now, even though his contract with the Dutch side expires at the end of the season.
Despite not winning the Europa League that year, he has two Dutch leagues and two cups in his résumé.
