Barcelona were keen on bringing Adrien Rabiot of Paris Saint-Germain to Camp Nou in the summer, but the deal did not take shape and the midfielder is still at Parc des Princes.
Even before the start of this campaign, the Ligue 1 winners were aware of the interest from Ernesto Valverde’s side in the 23-year-old and Friday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo has a story about the French international on their back page.
It’s claimed that when the Camp Nou outfit were negotiating with the player’s employer for ‘months and months’, the latter made a counter offer for Sergio Busquets.
Thomas Tuchel side’s ‘opened the door’ for Rabiot to join Barcelona, if the Spaniard was allowed to move in the opposite direction.
Les Parisiens were unsuccessful in their efforts in acquiring the 30-year-old’s signature, who signed a new deal with the Spanish champions on Thursday, keeping his release clause of €500m, which will expire in 2023.
Rabiot, on the other hand, is a free agent next summer and PSG are yet to tie him down to a new contract. A failure from them to extend his deal before 2018 will then allow him to sign a pre-contract with any club outside France.
And that obviously includes Barcelona.
