Every summer people take to social media, usually Twitter, to try and get false transfer rumours going. Usually it’s just to trick people, or a joke among friends, but occasionally it can even spread.

On July 31st, a Spanish language account claimed Diego Costa had agreed a return to Sevilla on loan. The situation was said to be very advanced and it was even claimed Aston Villa would continue to pay his entire wages.

It should have quickly been obvious to anyone checking the replies or seeing the account’s previous tweets that it was almost certainly someone playing games. Indeed, the last bit about Villa paying all of his salary probably pushed it all a bit too far.

However, many people didn’t check and so the rumour spread. Fans contacted what is thought to be Diego Carlos’ account on Instagram and he replied to one post saying the transfer was impossible with ‘impossible?’.

Estadio Deportivo have contacted people close to the player who didn’t deny it was his account, but didn’t clarify his intentions. It was explained he still has friends in Seville, loves the city and club and sees himself returning one day.

As far as Estadio Deportivo have it, that day is certainly not now.

The local Seville sports newspaper reports the club ‘does not understand’ why Diego Carlos would be sending any winks to them this summer.

He’s not on their list and they wouldn’t be able to finance a transfer. The situation is described as ‘awkward’, and it’s only in the scenario Aston Villa were desperate to get rid and would pay most of his wages that any interest could appear.
