Bought by new investors and building a promising hierarchy with Paulo Sousa as manager and Eduardo Macia as director of football, Bordeaux plan to go relatively big in the summer without overspending.
Determined to land a big name if they can after attempting to loan Adrien Silva from Leicester back in January, the Ligue 1 side could turn their attention to Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud, who is far from happy with his game time at Stamford Bridge.
Seemingly open to a return to France if that’s what it takes to get some minutes under his belt ahead of the 2020 Euros, the veteran forward might prefer a move to a club playing in a European competition, but if he can’t, there are worse options than Bordeaux.
In fact, the club’s sporting director, Hugo Varela, admitted to L’Equipe the Chelsea striker was one of the players they were looking at and had enquired about.
He said: “People who know [Olivier Giroud] have told us so much good about him as a player, of course, but also as a person. He has the attributes we are looking for, but he isn’t the only one. Regardless of who comes, we know negotiations will be hard.”
Having triggered the one-year extension in the France international’s contract, Chelsea will now be able to get money for Giroud in the summer should any club come knocking.
A lot could also rest on how their potential transfer ban pans out.
If it’s upheld, they won’t want to let anyone go and risk weakening their squad without being able to reinforce it.
