The Hernandez brothers sound like they’re Spanish, or South American, but are actually from Marseille in France. The player’s father, also French, played for Marseille, and that’s why the children were born in the city.
Later, Jean-Francois Hernandez and his family moved to Spain for spells with Rayo Vallecano and Atletico Madrid, and then back to Rayo again.
Atletico left a mark and Lucas and Theo Hernandez have been through the club’s youth system. Theo is still just 18 years of age but Lucas, at the grand old age of 20, is looking to make a breakthrough to become a regular first team player over the next season.
His progress has caught the eye of Manchester City, explain Spanish newspaper AS in their Thursday edition. Atletico are a little concerned and have therefore pushed for a new contract.
The release clause has been put at €25m, and AS believe that’s high for a youngster who isn’t a regular starting first team player. The idea is that it’s high enough to keep Manchester City away.
If they’re really interested, it’s almost certainly not.
