Leeds United now face competition from Atlético Madrid for Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, making life even more difficult for Daniel Farke’s side.
That’s according to RMC Sport, who report that after Leeds made an offer, Atlético have now been in contact with their French counterparts about a transfer.
They explain that the Spanish side have been monitoring Diarra’s performances this season and have now enquired with Strasbourg about him.
Leeds have been monitoring the midfielder and a report earlier this month stated that they were the only side to have made a concrete offer for him. Other Premier League sides, such as Everton, have been credited with an interest as well.
It was made clear in those reports from France that Leeds faced an uphill battle to get Diarra, as he wasn’t particularly keen on a move to Elland Road at this moment in time.
Now Atlético could be set to make things even more difficult. They have enquired with Strasbourg and with the player’s entourage in recent weeks. They’ve also had scouts watching him in Ligue 1.
A move would be looked on favourably by Diarra, as it would offer him Champions League football. Leeds cannot offer that, having only returned to the Premier League from the Championship this summer.
Atlético are not rushing into a deal as yet. Any move would likely exceed €25m. They are interested, though, and potentially providing big competition for Leeds United.
