While Tottenham are heavily focused on investing in the squad this summer, there is one major departure in the offing and that’s Christian Eriksen.

The Danish midfielder made it clear after the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool that he was keen to make the step up and has not backed down from that stance.

A player of his quality is unlikely to have a shortage of offers, although Spurs big asking price may put off suitors.

Real Madrid have been heavily linked, with Florentino Perez seeing Eriksen as an alternative to Paul Pogba, but the midfielder’s future could rest on the other side of the Spanish capital.

Marca report today that Atletico Madrid have identified the Spurs man as an alternative to James Rodriguez.

Atletico are keen on the Colombian and he is open to the move but that’s dependant on Real Madrid agreeing to an affordable deal, with Atletico hoping for somewhere between €40m and €50m.

Marca believe there is a possibility that Madrid will ask for more, or that Rodriguez will potentially stay if there are other departures from the Bernabeu.

Eriksen is the designated Plan B in that eventuality and ‘Diego Simeone, Miguel Angel Gil Marin and Andrea Berta have put the possibility of the Danish international on the table.’

The newspaper doesn’t mention Spurs’ asking price but given he has a year left on his contract; it may be closer to the price Atletico are hoping to negotiate for Rodriguez.
