The future of Carles Gil, loaned to Deportivo La Coruña last season by Aston Villa, remains a big deal for the Spanish press, as both Real Betis and the club he was loaned to look set to have a battle for his services in the coming months.

The 24-year-old winger enjoyed a rather erratic season back in Spain, hindered by injuries, managing just the one goal and four assists in 23 league appearances, but it appears it was enough to convince Deportivo La Coruña to try and keep him.

Gil has made it clear quite a few times that he would prefer not to return to Villa Park next season if possible, but, of course, the final decision isn’t up to him.

Cadena SER tried to clarify his situation a bit on Wednesday, explaining that Aston Villa are yet to take a decision regarding the Spaniard’s future at the club, meaning they could still ask him to return and play for them next year in the Championship.

Both Betis and Deportivo have expressed an interest in signing him this summer, even if the former of the two recently changed their director of football, but they will have to wait and see what Steve Bruce has planned first.

Our bet is, if they can make back most of the £3.5m they spent on him in the first place, Aston Villa wouldn’t be too unhappy to say goodbye to him.
