Earlier today we covered a report from Wednesday’s edition of Spanish newspaper Marca which stated Aston Villa made an attempt to sign Rodrigo Riquelme from Atlético Madrid during the January window.

Marca explained Villarreal had tried to loan the player, with the insinuation Aston Villa’s attempt was for a permanent transfer. Both were knocked back and now the 25-year-old could be offered to Tottenham Hotspur as part payment for Argentina defender Cristian Romero.

Wednesday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo, another Spanish newspaper, has a separate story which again includes Atlético, Aston Villa and an Argentina international.

Mundo Deportivo claim Aston Villa have made an attempt to sign Rodrigo De Paul. They offer no further details on that, just that Unai Emery’s side have ‘tried to sign him’.

De Paul’s contract expires in 2026 and Atlético Madrid wouldn’t want him to get into the final year of his deal, so therefore if there’s no renewal he’ll be put on the market.

Should Aston Villa still be keen then that would present an opportunity to strike for the 30-year-old.
