Aston Villa’s potential move for Sevilla left-back Marcos Acuña now appears to be off after the player was ruled out with a muscular injury.

That’s according to Diario de Sevilla, who cover an announcement from Sevilla detailing the left-back’s latest setback.

Aston Villa have been chasing Acuña’s signature for well over a week, with director of football Monchi keen to reunite with the player at Villa Park.

A deal had been steadily progressing between the two clubs despite an initial coldness in the talks, thanks to what Sevilla perceived as a low offer from Aston Villa that was considered almost insulting.

Reports had indicated that Acuña was keen on the move, though, and had already struck an agreement with Villa to make the switch before the end of the transfer window.

The last report on the matter stated a deal was still being negotiated between Aston Villa and Sevilla, with the former refusing to meet the Spanish side’s demands and that leading to a stalemate in proceedings.

It seems those negotiations will now be completely off, though, as Acuna has been ruled out for several weeks and looks set to be out until after the international break.

“He will be out for several weeks after confirming a myotendinous injury to the femoral biceps of his right leg, which occurred in Vitoria in the game against Deportivo Alavés, as confirmed by the Medical Services of Sevilla FC,” Diario report a Sevilla statement saying.

“The period of sick leave for this type of injury usually takes several weeks, although follow-up tests will be carried out on the player to re-evaluate the deadlines for his return to work and reinstatement.”

The injury is the latest in a series of issues the defender has suffered in his career so far, with muscle problems seeming him spend a month out last season and several muscle related injuries also seeing him spend time out at Sporting Club de Portugal.

This latest injury appears to have been the most damaging though, with his move to Aston Villa presumably now dead in the water as a result of it.
