Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been warned to calm down, lest he start facing even more irate opponents in the future.
The Villa goalkeeper has established himself as one of the Premier League’s better goalkeepers over the last 18 months, with a short stint as Arsenal number one, followed by a move to Villa Park in 2020.
He’s been superb for the Villans since then, with a series of impressive performances and an impressive record of 21 clean sheets in 59 games so far.
That’s also seen him establish himself as the number one for Argentina, for whom his record stands at 11 clean sheets in 16 appearances.
The latest of those came in a 1-0 win over Colombia this week, a result which further strengthened Argentina’s bid for a place at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper was seen celebrating wildly after the game, particularly in a viral clip that shows him in the background while his opposite number Camilo Vargas was interviewed by the media.
That clip earned the Aston Villa number one plenty of fans, but it seems former Argentina international Alfio “Coco” Basile is not one of them.
“I would have told him to calm down a bit,” Diario Con Vos report him saying.
“I imagine that (Lionel) Scaloni has said something to him because he’s no idiot and has many years of experience in the dressing room.
“He knows that the opponents are waiting for you, and one day when they take revenge, and something goes wrong with Dibu, they can give him a double dose.
“As a goalkeeper, we can’t argue with him; he plays all the time. But it’s very likely that opponents will start to get angry with him. You don’t have to give anyone a hard time, especially when you’re the superior keeper.”
