When Jordan Amavi signed for Aston Villa he was easily considered one of the best young defensive talents in France. An outside chance for inclusion in France’s Euro 2016 squad, a season doing well in the Premier League could have been the key to getting Amavi to the tournament.

However, things went badly on all fronts. Amavi suffered a serious injury whilst away with France’s U21s and the player’s first season in England was ruined. Whilst Amavi was out Aston Villa struggled hugely with weaknesses all over the pitch, and the perception of the club became very negative.

Relegation to the Championship was inevitable and under Steve Bruce, Villa aren’t looking at promotion this season. Therefore it’s understandable in L’Equipe’s run down of players for World Cup 2018 that Amavi is given a very small chance of taking part.

To have any chance of changing things for the better, Amavi would need a summer transfer. The left back has been loyal to Aston Villa, but a further year in the Championship isn’t going to progress his career at the highest level.

Even with a transfer, Amavi may need there to be a rash of fullback injuries to give himself a reasonable chance of making the World Cup.
