Aston Villa star Youri Tielemans has moved to defender Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco, insisting the Red Devils’ problems are not caused by their manager.
RTL Info cover comments from the Aston Villa midfielder today in which he defends Tedesco and insists it is up to the players to start picking up results.
Tedesco has been in charge of Belgium since February 2023 after replacing Roberto Martinez in the role following the World Cup in Qatar.
His reign so far can very much be characterised as a mixed bag with 12 wins from 22 games and only four defeats appearing to be a solid record.
However, Belgium are currently on a run of just two wins in their last eight games, including a disappointing showing at Euro 2024 that saw them knocked out at the last 16 stage after a disappointing group stage performance.
The pressure is very much on him to turn things around and get a new Belgian generation but the Aston Villa midfielder, who has been a regular under him, doesn’t believe the criticism is fair or being aimed in the right direction.
“It’s different management, but I wouldn’t say it’s better or worse with Tedesco, we only played one tournament. The Euro was not at the top. We need more time to progress,” he said.
“Everyone saw that we played well against France, few chances conceded, many created. If I converted this penalty, the match would have been different.
“It’s been two years, many players have stopped or are no longer called up. We need to find a balance. Tedesco needs time to see how far this team can go.”
