Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana has moved to back Kevin de Bruyne, albeit playing down the Manchester City man’s controversial comments.
Voetbal Primeur cover comments from the midfielder to Sporza today after the 2-0 defeat to France on Monday.
The Belgians were well beaten by the French thanks to goals from Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele, with the hosts dominating proceedings.
De Bruyne was furious after the defeat, appearing to tell technical director Frank Vercauteren ‘I quit’ before embarking on an extraordinary post-match outburst.
He slammed his teammates and manager Domenico Tedesco’s tactics to the Belgian media, insisting that Belgium had been too defensive and put in an ‘unacceptable’ performance.
The Manchester City star went on to suggest that Belgium were nowhere near good enough, creating a rift that spread through the camp and was only enhanced when Tedesco was questioned about the situation after the game.
It seems though, that De Bruyne may have at least one supporter in the dressing room in the form of Aston Villa’s Onana, who was keen to play the whole things down when he was later questioned.
“That is a statement that makes sense,” the Aston Villa man is quoted as saying.
“We can play poorly, that can happen to anyone, but we have to do our best and radiate motivation.
“He said at half-time that everyone had to play better. With more intensity, because this is not Belgium.”
