Aston Villa have repeatedly been linked with Julian Alvarez in recent weeks, with multiple reports coming from the South American media.

There’s been various claims about how much the River Plate attacker will cost when it comes to leaving the Argentine club, and there’s clearly been an attempt to talk up the race for his signing.

Last week it was stated Aston Villa have been keen on the 21-year-old for a while, having followed the youngster’s progression over the past year.

Now, Italy’s Calciomercato reports Villa are in the race with Fiorentina, AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Ajax.

Fiorentina are presented as an addition to what was an already established transfer race.

For Aston Villa to have any chance of signing Alvarez, especially in the January window, then they need to be moving away from the relegation zone pretty quickly.

The sale of Jack Grealish, and the investment of funds ahead of his exit, was supposed to herald a bright new future, so the club could attract players like Alvarez.

That hasn’t quite happened yet.
