Earlier today, we covered the Spanish reaction to claims Atlético Madrid are interested in taking Lucas Digne from Aston Villa. Radio Marca reported there’d been some sort of contact and whilst nothing serious seems to have happened on the transfer it was seen as a potential solution for Diego Simeone’s side.
Marca now pick it up and explain Digne could be tempt to join Atlético Madrid to play in the Champions League next season. Aston Villa missed out on qualifying for UEFA’s premier competition after losing to Manchester United on the final day of their Premier League campaign. Newcastle United just pipped Unai Emery’s side to the place.
As far as the Spanish newspaper believe, Digne very much wants to retain his place in France’s squad for the World Cup, after Didier Deschamps brought him back into the fold.
The belief is the showcase of Champions League football would help in that regard, just as it helped the Frenchman in the recently concluded season.
Added to that is a belief Aston Villa could look to sell this summer to make sure they get something rather than nothing for the 31-year-old.
