Starting just over a third of Aston Villa’s Premier League games this season, there is certainly an argument that Anwar El Ghazi could find more regular football elsewhere.
Where that might be remains to be seen, but there could be a surprising destination that opens up for the Netherlands international this summer.
That, thanks to the strings potentially pulled by his agent, Jorge Mendes, could be AS Roma.
Gazzetta dello Sport are the ones reporting it, explaining that Mourinho could ask for a player in most important positions in the coming summer to rebuild the Serie A side’s squad, and the attack is part of that.
It’s said that three players’ names ‘are to be followed’ as we near the transfer window, and those are Carlos Vinicius, currently on loan at Tottenham from Benfica, Real Madrid’s Isco and Aston Villa’s Anwar El Ghazi.
The 26-year-old has been a rather solid investment for the Villans following his transfer from Lille in 2019, but the emergence of other players in his role has made regular minutes from the off more difficult to come by.
We’ll have to wait and see what comes of it, but should the opportunity to work under Mourinho at a club of AS Roma’s stature present itself, it could be difficult to ignore.
