Carles Gil doesn’t want to remain at Aston Villa, he’s made that very clear.

Bought from Valencia in January 2015, the Spanish midfielder, despite doing relatively well during his short time at Villa Park, didn’t want to linger in the Championship, eventually seeking a loan back to his home country with Deportivo La Coruña.

While his season has been hindered a few times by a handful of injuries, the 24-year-old has picked up four assists in 22 appearances, and helped his side maintain their La Liga status on Sunday as they drew 0-0 away to Villarreal.

Sporting Gijón’s win away to SD Eibar meant picking up a point was a necessity, and even if, mathematically, relegation is still possible, the 9 goal swing required on the last day of the season seems unlikely.

Speaking in the mixed zone to El Desmarque after the hard fought battle, the Aston Villa loanee, who came off in the 83rd minute, said: “I was sh*tting myself on the bench. We’ve spent a few messed up weeks, but tomorrow we can wake up with a smile on our faces.”

Now that Deportivo know they are extremely likely to be a top flight side next season, they can focus on strengthening their squad for next season.

Whether that means trying to get a deal sorted with Aston Villa over Carles Gil remains to be seen, even if that’s something the player himself wants.
