A couple of days ago, Aston Villa, currently enjoying a very good first half of the season in the Premier League, were brought into the chase to sign Christian Eriksen.
Corriere dello Sport were the ones doing it, explaining that intermediaries had conducted ‘enquiries’ on behalf of the Villains and West Ham, before adding it wasn’t ‘certain’ the Dane would accept ‘either of those destinations’.
Well, we have something of an update from the same newspaper on Thursday, as they reiterate the ‘timid enquiries’ made by both the Hammers and Aston Villa, but the feeling is that ‘they aren’t teams particularly appreciated’ by Eriksen.
That’s obviously a problem if Dean Smith really wants the Denmark international at his club, but it was always going to be a long shot.
The issue of club stature was always going to be an issue, as Eriksen, with his past at Tottenham and present at Inter, will be looking for a club competing for titles and European competitions.
While Aston Villa are currently eighth, with two games in hand on the likes of Southampton and Leicester City, there’s no guarantee this form will last for the remainder of the campaign.
