Aston Villa’s chances of signing Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao may have been handed a boost as the player is unconvinced by the Spanish club’s offer of a new contract.

That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who say a reported ‘dizzying’ offer from Villa could lure the winger away from the La Liga side.

A report in England during the January transfer window made it clear that Unai Emery was a big fan of Williams and was eyeing up a move as he rebuilds his Aston Villa squad this summer.

That report stated Emery would be willing to go all out to get the player and would even be willing to offer him €135,000 a week, or €7m a year, to make the move to Villa Park.

That’s a huge potential offer for Williams, ‘dizzying’ in fact, and while his brother Iñaki Williams has assured those who will listen that his sibling is happy where he is that does not mean he ‘closes the door’ on starting an adventure abroad.

The Basque club’s plan was, and remains, to renew his current contract as that expires next summer but initial talks have not gone as they have planned.

Indeed, their initial offer, which includes a salary based on objectives, ‘doesn’t convince’ him to extend his stay at this moment in time.

‘There is time’ for that to change and there is a plan for the two parties to sit down and talk to try and work something out.

However, the reality is that Nico Williams’ goodbye to Athletic ‘doesn’t seem far off’, which will be positive news to Aston Villa if they are as keen on him as has been reported.
