Aston Villa have now completely walked away from a move for Joao Felix, according to claims from Portugal on Wednesday.
The gist of the most recent reporting had been that interest from Villa was conditional on being able to loan the Portugal international, whilst Atletico Madrid were holding out for a permanent transfer somewhere.
Record in Portugal have a fresh update about the situation and they believe that Aston Villa have now abandoned the chase.
His situation remains open, as of now. Unai Emery is an admirer of Joao Felix, but the English club have left the chase for the player and Monchi will now focus on potential alternatives.
This has given hope to Benfica, who are already speaking to Atletico Madrid about the move. Villa were said to be one of the main threats in the saga and their exit from the race means that Benfica could well be favourites to sign the 24-year-old.
Of course, given this report is from Portugal it may be a little biased on behalf of Benfica, so it’s worth keeping that in mind.
