Sporting’s Pedro Gonçalves has been on Aston Villa’s transfer agenda for more than a year. The Premier League club have continued to keep tabs on the 26-year-old as per claims from Portugal.

Last November, A Bola reported Aston Villa were preparing to make an offer for him. This claim surfaced days before he suffered a muscle injury that forced him to spend 150 days on the sidelines.

Two months ago, Jornal de Notícias stated the Villans continue to show interest in him and that was backed up by A Bola in April.

Today’s edition of A Bola claims both Unai Emery’s side and Bayer Leverkusen have been watching the midfielder.

His contract lasts until 2027 and despite his long-term absence due to an injury, Sporting want to offer him an improved deal. The Lions, led by their president, Frederico Varandas, have communicated this to Gonçalves’ agent.

According to the report, the new contract will see his release clause [currently at €80m] and his salary improve. Luckily for Sporting, they no longer have to worry about Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen.

The newspaper states the two clubs have cooled their interest because of his injury and that should put an end to Aston Villa’s plan to sign Gonçalves in the summer window.
