Aston Villa’s chances of a January move for Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram may have been given a boost, with the German club needing to sell before they can buy.
Thuram is out of contract with the Bundesliga side in the summer and yet to sign a new deal, meaning he is able to negotiate a free transfer with clubs around Europe come January.
The likelihood of him being sold in that window is instead increasing, with it the last opportunity for Borussia to make money on one of their most valuable assets.
Thuram has subsequently been linked with a move to various places, including the Premier League, where Aston Villa, Arsenal and Crystal Palace were all named as suitors this week.
That was followed by a claim Aston Villa could get him for a ‘fraction’ of his value should they wish to do so.
Sky Sports Germany now cover the situation and explain that if Thuram does not extend his deal then January is the ‘last chance’ for Gladbach to collect a fee.
They would need to do so too, with the German side ‘dependent on prior player sales’ before they can bring in any new players, something sporting director Roland Virkus has also hinted at.
“We are rather in the situation that we have to react,” he is quoted as saying.
“We have an eye on the market and one or two players have been scouted and pre-scouted.”
