The Portuguese media today gives a mention to Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion interest in Sporting star Pedro Gonçalves.
That’s a story from A Bola, who write about the player being completely focused on his season with the Lions and convincing national team manager Roberto Martinez that he deserves a place in Portugal’s Euros squad.
The newspaper then points out that Aston Villa and Brighto interest had been revealed in the summer window, and claims those two clubs continue to be keen on his transfer.
The problem is that Sporting reportedly considered Gonçalves ‘not negotiable’ back then and will continue to do so, as they wouldn’t get rid of such a player in January. That means the winger would only leave the club for the amount of his release clause, which stands at €80m.
Gonçalves has three goals and three assists in 13 appearances this season. Those are not quite as impressive numbers as he used to have in the past couple of years, but that may also be an argument for Aston Villa and Brighton to get the price down.
As always, a summer move looks likelier than a rushed switch in January.
