A serious injury setback to Wesley Moraes forced Aston Villa to sign a new forward in the winter market.

Four days ago, the Premier League side completed Mbwana Ally Samatta’s transfer as the player arrived at Villa Park from Genk.

Prior to signing Samatta, DH in Belgium reported Villa interest in Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke. The Belgium international enjoyed a good spell in Birmingham between 2012 and 2015.

Friday’s edition of Het Belang van Limburg claims the club are still ‘interested’ in their former player, even though they’ve signed Samatta in this window. It’s claimed they took the player from Genk to compensate for Wesley’s absence.

Villa are 16th in the table and are two points ahead of 18th placed Bournemouth. According to the report, Smith’s side would welcome an additional attacker and therefore, they have approached the Eagles for Benteke.

Villa’s idea is to sign the former Liverpool man on a loan deal.

HBVL’s report doesn’t mention if Palace have responded to Villa’s request for Benteke.
