Switzerland chief Pierluigi Tami has admitted that they are ‘worried’ about Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.
Xhaka finds himself under increasing criticism again at the Emirates after a red card in the 1-0 defeat to Burnley at the weekend.
The midfielder was sent off for putting his hand around an opponent’s throat, initially receiving a yellow card but seeing the decision overturned by VAR.
It was a moment of pure stupidity from a player with vast experience, particularly given the delicate situation at Arsenal and his standing at the club after his falling out with the fans last season.
It’s led to questions being raised about his future at the club once again, with many questioning his attitude given this is his third red card since joining Arsenal in 2016.
It’s a situation that Switzerland are ‘closely monitoring’ according to Blick, who have comments from Tami on the situation.
“We are worried about our captain,” the newspaper report him saying.
“The criticism of Xhaka is increasing, which I don’t understand. Because he’s probably under pressure from the criticism, I’m not surprised what happened on Sunday.
“Xhaka had had moments like this in the past and then played very well again. He is a role model for us.
“I was surprised how positive Xhaka is towards his teammates and also about his level on the pitch. Xhaka’s consistency is important to us. “
