Arsenal Women star Vivianne Miedema has suggested she wants to see continued improvement from the Gunners before signing a new deal at the club.
The Dutch striker has been a revelation since joining the club from Bayern Munich in 2017, scoring 52 goals in 50 appearances so far.
The latest of those goals came in 6-1 victory over Tottenham on Sunday, with her hat-trick meaning she broke the all-time Women’s Super League goalscoring record, which was previously held by former Manchester City winger Nikita Parris.
This has, of course, made the Arsenal striker headline news, particularly because her contract at the club is set to expire next summer.
That is something the club are naturally determined to rectify so they can avoid losing their star player, and manager Joe Montemurro claimed after the win over Spurs that talks will begin in November.
Miedema is seemingly happy to extend her stay in London too but wants to ensure there is progress on the pitch first.
“I think I am in a good position to get a new deal out of it,” she told De Telegraaf.
“The English competition is the strongest in the world at the moment. Players from all over the world are now coming here, really big names too.
“Hopefully Arsenal will continue to develop as well, then I won’t see myself leaving so soon. But you never know.”
For now, she can focus on adding more goals and records to an already seriously impressive CV in that regard.
As well as being the WSL’s record top goalscorer, and beating Parris’ record despite playing 60 games fewer than her, she is also the record goalscorer for the Netherlands with 69 goals thus far.
Those are quite frankly ridiculous numbers for a 24-year-old striker, particularly given she’s only been in the WSL since 2017, something she’s more than aware of.
“It is quite bizarre,” she added.
“The league has been around for ten years, and some players have been there from the start.
“The fact that as a youngster I break that record in three seasons is really special to me.
“Hopefully, I can set my record even higher. I want to set the bar as high as possible for the rest.”
