In the January transfer window, AS Monaco completed the signing of Radosław Majecki from Legia Warsaw and allowed the goalkeeper to return to the Polish club on loan until the end of this season.
The 20-year-old impressed for Legia Warsaw in the qualifiers of the Europa League, keeping seven clean sheets in eight matches and conceding one goal in the process.
Prior to joining the Ligue 1 side, several clubs monitored the keeper and Arsenal are among them.
This is according to Legia Warsaw goalkeeping coach Krzysztof Dowhań, who revealed the Gunners looked at Majecki, during an interview with Przegląd Sportowy.
“I knew that he was being monitored by western clubs, but I was not aware that it was specifically about this team [Monaco]. It turned out that they had been interested in him for a year,” Dowhań said.
“Arsenal also watched [Majecki] for a long time. I remember how the Gunners’ goalkeeping coach came to Łazienkowska Street, watched warm-ups, because one can often learn a lot more about the goalkeeper’s skills than looking at the match itself.
“The French [side] were the more specific, determined. It is important to me that we have him until the end of the season. I think it was a bargaining chip in talks between clubs.”
Dowhań’s comments suggest Monaco were more determined in signing Majecki than Arsenal.
Przegląd Sportowy also claims Majecki wants to follow the footsteps of his compatriot and West Ham United custodian Łukasz Fabiański.
When asked if the two have similar qualities, Dowhań explained: “He is a little more powerful than Fabian, they have technical training at a similar level, but he is also a bit like Artur Boruc.
“I am happy to see Radziu catch the ball. Not only with his hands, but with his whole body. Fabian has the same thing. He is very confident in interventions; he goes all the way. It’s similar in life: like a kid, but he knows what he wants.”
