Arsenal want to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid ‘at all costs’ this summer and are the club most likely to make a move for him.

That’s according to Sport, who say the Gunners are the club who ‘could bet more’ on his signature than other interested parties.

The newspaper explains that Asensio is locked in contract negotiations with Real Madrid as his current deal is set to expire next summer.

At the moment, there is no agreement on an extension as Madrid have only offered to maintain his current wage packet of €4.4m a year, but the player wants it increased to €7m a year.

Asensio is looking likely to leave the Bernabeu as a result, particularly because he knows his role at the club is ‘declining’, and he wants to play in the World Cup in Qatar.

Madrid would be happy to let him leave but want €50m in return, something the midfielder is unhappy about. He has even threatened to see out his contract and leave on a free in 2023.

That’s something Madrid don’t contemplate and thus hope that Mendes will find a club willing to pay for the Spaniard.

Fortunately, Asensio is a ‘big name’ on the European football scene, and there are ‘several teams’ who want him, including Arsenal.

Indeed, they would like to secure a deal ‘at all costs’ and are the one side among his suitors who ‘could bet more’ on his signing if he decides to leave Real Madrid.

That’s a decision he’s yet to make, but should he do so, there is a feeling, at least as far as Sport are concerned, that Arsenal will be among those strongly competing to sign him.
