Sport on Tuesday are reporting news that could quite frankly petrify Arsenal fans if it turns out to be true: Mesut Özil and Alexis Sanchez are unhappy with their wages and want to either get new contracts or find a move elsewhere.
According to them, both players and their agents made it clear to Arsenal they weren’t happy with their salary of around £180k/week, which is small change compared to Chelsea’s Diego Costa who apparently earns £200k/week.
Whether you choose to believe these figures or not (that Costa wage seems a bit over the top), that’s up to you, but Sport also say that both players have made it clear that if Arsenal can’t afford to give them the wages they deserve, they’ll happily go on the market and wait until someone comes along and offers them what they want.
There have been a few reports in the past suggesting Arsenal could be set to offer Özil a new contract worth £200,000/week, but the player said he was relaxed over the whole thing and would wait until the season ended, which it has.
As for Sanchez, various reports emerged in England towards the end of the season claiming the player wanted the same wage as Özil as well as new signings to show Arsenal would be able to compete for the title next season.
It seems this Sport story is just a rehash of what was already being thrown around as the 2015-16 season ended, meaning we wouldn’t take this as news, but more as Sport giving Barcelona fans hope.
If you’re already worrying, then please don’t allow this to make things worse, but if, like Özil, you were already calm about it all, stay that way.
