Since Arsenal made the permanent signing of Pablo Mari from Flamengo in the summer of 2020, the Brazilian media featured several stories regarding the performance bonuses in that deal.

Besides having paid for the loan and the purchase, the Gunners had been spending an extra €1m every time the defender completed 10 appearances for the club, and according to reports, those add-ons could be repeated up to eight times.

So as Arsenal now agreed the loan of Mari to Italian side Monza, it sounded like Flamengo would no longer make money with the defender, but Globo Esporte now comes up with some interesting information on this case.

It’s claimed that if all goals had been reached, meaning he had played more, the Rio de Janeiro side would indeed not have the right to any more money from a new transfer.

However, since that didn’t happen, the Gunners will have to give the Brazilian club 40% of his sale.

Mari has joined Monza on a loan deal, but that includes an obligatory buying option worth €5m if the club stay up.

So, should that happen, Flamengo are now expected to stay with €2m from that, with Arsenal keeping the other €3m.
