Whenever a Bundesliga club are in transfer or renewal talks which get a little tricky, the German media refer to it as ‘poker’ and that’s what SportBild do today with Mario Gotze.

The Borussia Dortmund player has a contract until June 2020, and there’s been hope around a renewal. His performances have seen him work his way back into BVB hearts, and SportBild point out he’s again one of the club’s top shirt sellers.

Arsenal are said to have ‘renewed interest’ in the player, but it’s still thought that a renewal is the likelier outcome.

Gotze’s move to Bayern Munich didn’t go as planned, and whilst Arsenal and the Premier League will always have an attraction, taking a transfer risk may not be so appealing given how hard he’s had to fight back.

Borussia Dortmund’s Michael Zorc has spoken to the German magazine about transfer claims from England, and pretty much dismissed it as a serious option for the player now: “For years we’ve known the rumours from England that come over to us. As always, we are relaxed. Because we are in a good exchange with Mario’s father and his advisor.”

The player is currently on vacation, and renewal talks can continue later this summer. There’s the possibility Arsenal claims will rise again if the poker gets a little difficult.
